Playing at #20 Point Loma Nazarene (6-1, 2-0) to open Golden State Athletic Conference play proved to be a challenging test for Westmont Baseball (1-4, 0-2) as the Warriors lost both games of a doubleheader by scores of 14-1 and 8-0. The Sea Lions put together two big innings in the first game and one in the second in defeating the Warriors on Saturday.
In the first game, Point Loma jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, chasing junior starter Brandon Downs from the game after giving up four runs on four walks.
The Warriors took back one run in the top of the second inning when senior third baseman Andy Dude scored on a wild pitch. Dude reached first on a two-out single through the left side and then advanced to second when junior left fielder John Evans singled through the right side. Dude then stole third base to put himself in position to score. The wild pitch came on a third-strike to junior centerfielder Jon White, who made it safely to first base when the ball got away from the catcher.
In the bottom of the seventh, Point Loma Nazarene sent 15 men to the plate and pushed across nine runs to put the game out of reach.
Freshman designated hitter Ryan Haddock, junior second baseman Phillip Valle and Evans each recorded two hits for the Warriors in the loss.
In the second game, freshman pitcher Timothy Crabbe held the Sea Lions to just one run on two hits through the first four innings of play. But Point Loma scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 7-0 in the seven inning game. Evans was charged with seven runs, four of which were earned, while striking out five and walking four.
Valle repeated his two hit performance making him four for seven on the day and six for eleven on the year.
Westmont will return to action on Wednesday, February 14 as they host San Diego Christian in a doubleheader at Russ Carr Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
