Game Recap: Baseball |

Lancers Take Doubleheader from Warriors

After giving up five runs in the first inning, junior Erik Gaustad shut down #8 California Baptist for seven innings, but it wasn't enough as Westmont Baseball (1-15, 0-12) fell to the Lancers 5-3 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. California Baptist (15-7, 6-6) also prevailed in the night cap by a score of 10-1.

After leading off the fifth inning of game one with a walk, junior short stop Anthony Martinez advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a double to right center by junior second baseman Philip Valle. Valle, who was three for five in the game, leads the Warriors at the plate with a .395 batting average and a slugging percentage of .581.

The Warriors scored another run in the top of the sixth when sophomore center fielder Derek Fugitt hit the ball up the middle to score freshman catcher Luke Montzingo from second base. Montzingo led off the inning with a walk and stole second base, his fourth steal in five attempts this season.

Fugitt scored the Warriors' final run in the eighth inning after reaching first on an error by the Lancers' center fielder. Fugitt advanced to second when Martinez was walked and scored on a single to center by Gaustad.

Junior Jonathan White took the loss in the second game after giving up nine runs, six earned, on eleven hits in three and two-thirds innings of work. White allowed three walks and struck out six. Freshman Brandon Downs finished out the game on the mound for the Warriors allowing one unearned on five hits in two and one-third innings. Downs struck out three without giving up a walk.

The Warriors' only run came on a solo home run by Valle in the fourth inning. The shot to right center field was his second home run of the week.

Westmont will play two games this week against Vanguard (6-7, 5-6). The first will be in Costa Mesa on Wednesday and the second at home on Thursday. Both games begin at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, Westmont will host The Master's (8-11, 4-7) in a doubleheader. First pitch is at 11:00 a.m.
