Game Recap: Baseball |

Eagles Take Two from Warriors

The conference opener for Westmont Baseball (1-6, 0-2 GSAC) did not turn out as hoped. The Warriors dropped both games of a doubleheader, losing at Concordia 4-1 in the first game and 6-3 in the second.

Right-handed pitcher Tim Crabbe took the loss for the Warriors after giving up four runs on six hits in five innings of work. Crabbe struck out five and walked seven.

Concordia (4-0, 2-0 GSAC) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI-single by Kyle Konicek and a two RBI-triple by Zach Barger. The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the third when Justin Baeza knocked an RBI-single into right field.

Dan Orlick pitched a complete, nine-inning game for Concordia, giving up one run on eight hits and striking out four without allowing a walk.

Westmont's run came in the top of the ninth. After Mike Zettl reached on an error to lead off the inning, Mark Boujikian singled to right field, advancing Zettl to second. Jordan Bottenfield hit into a double play, retiring Zettl at third but allowing Taylor Grace, who was pinch running for Boujikian, to advance to second. Colten Christianson then singled to center field, allowing Grace to score.

In the second game, Keith Johnson was assigned the loss after giving up six runs on six hits in four and one-third innings of work. Johnson struck out three and walked one.

Daniel Heben picked up the win for the Eagles while pitching all seven innings. Heben allowed three runs on six hits, struck out five and walked two.

The Warriors scored one run each in the second, third and fourth innings. Catcher Sam Wiley led off the second inning with a double to right center. Charles Whitman, who served as a courtesy runner for Wiley, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Zettl. Bottenfield drove Whitman home on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Concordia used a four-run second inning to jump in front of the Warriors. A two RBI-double by Jimmy Mittleberger accounted for the first Eagle runs of the game. John Kennedy added an RBI-double and Gregg Davidson a RBI-single.

In the third inning, Westmont's Taylor Maddox doubled down the left field line with two away. Christianson then singled to right, driving in Maddox. In the top of the fourth, Bottenfield received a one-out walk before Grace ripped an RBI-double to left.

Concordia added a single run in the fourth and fifth inning to account for the final score.

Westmont will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Fresno Pacific for a 4:00 p.m. game with the Sunbirds.
