Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Warriors Drop Season Opener in Final Minutes

For 85 minutes, #17 Westmont Women's Soccer battled Trinity Western (B.C.) in a scoreless game at Lovik Field on the Westmont campus. But in the eightY-fifth minute, the Spartans scored the game's only goal off the foot of Alicia Tesan, giving Westmont a loss in its season opener.

"It was a little disappointing at the end, but I think the majority of the game was played well by the team," said Westmont Associate Head Coach Kristi Kiely. "At the end of the game it is hard to come back. We could have done a better job fighting at the end. We saw a lot of good things and some things we need to work on."

Trinity Western (2-0) scored after Melissa Mobilio stripped the ball in the midfield and passed it to Rebecca Ferguson. Ferguson dribbled down the field before attempting to advance the ball forward to Alicia Tesan. Her pass, however, was intercepted by Westmont's Samantha Kleen.

"Sam did a good job of coming inside and clearing the ball," noted Kiely, "but they got a lucky deflection."

The ball hit Daniela Gerig in the face and ricocheted back to Tesan who was now one-on-one with Westmont goalkeeper Roxanne Love.

"Rox did a great job coming out (of the goal)," said Kiely, "but Tesan was able to put it into the back of the net without much of a problem.

"Trinity is a really good team," continued Kiely. "They had a couple of really good chances and Rox had a couple of very good saves."

One of those saves came in the thirty-third minute on a shot by Nikki Wright from the left side of the goal. Love's momentum was moving her toward her right, but Wright's shot was headed past the keeper on the left. Despite the momentum carrying her away from the ball, Love was able to switch directions, extend her left hand and knock the ball off its course.

The Warriors had a number of chances to score.

"Aolani Rueff had a good chance at the beginning of the game," said Kiely. "J.J (Jameisha Washington) and Jess (Zuehlsdorf) created some great chances from outside and Mel (Greene) took some good shots from the middle. As long as somebody can step up and actually put those shots in the back of the net, we will be okay.

"Defensively, Candace and Skyla had great games in the back," added the coach.

The Warriors will have a chance to even their record when they take on Hawaii-Hilo on Tuesday at Lovik Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
