Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Martinez Scores Twice to Lead Warriors to Win

Freshman forward Jenny Martinez scored the first two goals of her collegiate career as the Westmont Women's Soccer (2-2-2) defeated William Jessup (2-3) by a score of 2-0 on Thursday. Martinez scored what would turn out to be the game winner on an unassisted goal in the sixty-second minute.

"Brit Scannell took a shot which got deflected," reported Westmont head coach Kristi Kiely. "Loni (Rueff) shielded the ball and Jenny came running on to it and smashed it in on the ground just past the keeper at the near post."

The second goal came with just 2:45 remaining in the game.

"The ball was played out by Ashley Correa to Brit Scannell who was running down the line," said Kiely. "Brit took a couple of aggressive touches forward at speed and crossed it on the ground to Jenny who was running onto it. Jenny took a touch and then slotted it side netting, far post. It was a beautiful goal with a great combination, great overlap, and a great finish. We had a dozen of those (opportunities) and I'm glad we were able to get one in."

"Brit played the entire game outside and she worked very hard," said Kiely. "Her ability to work for 90 minutes up and down the field and be able to penetrate the way she did was rewarded with an assist."

Westmont outshot William Jessup 21-5 and placed nine of their shots on goal compared to two for their hosts. Despite the win, Kiely was concerned that Westmont did not score more.

"Finishing is such an art and we worked on it all week," reported the coach. "It showed in that we scored two goals, but we needed to be able to put a few more away. We are still having trouble finding that.

"Certainly Jenny Martinez found it today," continued the coach. "Because she looked so athletic in training all week and was finishing shots, I told (assistant coach) Dan (Ribbens) this morning that I thought Jenny would score for us today. You could feel it all week that it was coming. She just needed to unleash it and she did today. Both goals were very well placed. She had composure on the ball and composure in the box. I'm glad that all of her work has finally come to fruition."

Kiely was also pleased with the play of Westmont senior goalkeeper Roxanne Love.

"Rox came up with two very good saves," noted Kiely, "one in the first half and one in the second half that was off a corner.

"Melanie Greene had a fantastic game in the middle for us, especially offensively," said Kiely. "She was creating stuff, she was getting forward on the dribble, she was slipping balls through and she got off a couple of shots. But Mel was also winning balls in the air. Despite her 5-4 height, she is a viable weapon for us in the air. She is aggressive, smart and her technique is good."
Returning to the Warrior's lineup today was sophomore forward Ashley Correa, who missed the last three games due to an injury. One of the challenges for the Warriors is finding the right combination of players at forward among a number of talented scorers.

"Ashley came in with about 25 minutes left in the first game," reported Kiely. "Jenny and Loni have been a fantastic combination. They have played two and one-half games together up top. They are smart players who are starting to find a rhythm. Ashley, who is such a great player, is coming back from an injury and the question for us is how you fit her in the mix when you are playing a two-front. Jenny and Loni had been fantastic early on, but they hadn't put it away 20 minutes into a game when we thought they should have. We pulled them and put in Ashley and one other player. I think it was a little bit challenging for Ashley because she hasn't played in a two-front.

"At the start of the second half, we put Jenny and Loni back in and gave them 20 minutes to score, which they did it. Then we put Ashley back in with Jenny, which was also a great combination. Ashley had a couple of chances we would like to see her finish. Then we had Loni and Ash, which are another great pair.

"Today's game was like a really good training session for Ashley to get her legs underneath her, to work on her shot, on her vision, on the weight of her pass and on driving at people. Those are all parts of the game she does well, but I think she was just a little bit rusty. She certainly was a threat. This was a good day to get her in and get her minutes so she will be ready to go for Saturday."

Westmont will take on the Hawks of Holy Names on Saturday in a game schedule to be played at Merritt College in Oakland beginning at five o'clock.
