Westmont Women's Soccer traveled to the Inland Empire this weekend to battle Redlands on Friday and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday. They also had to fight triple digit temperatures. Unfortunately, the battle did not go well as Redlands handed the Warriors a 3-0 loss and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps salvaged a 1-0 win in the second overtime period.
"Redlands had three shots on goals, and made three goals," said Westmont head coach Kristy Kiely. "The goals were really quite fantastic. It has been a long time since I have seen a women's college team finish that way.
"We didn't come ready to play," acknowledged Kiely. "The first half we barely connected on three or four passes. We turned it around the second half. They didn't spend a lot of time on our half (of the field). We out shot them on goal, but we couldn't get it finished. It was a frustrating game. I wouldn't say the score reflects the whole game, but it reflects the first half."
The Warriors were also hampered by the absence of sophomore forward Ashley Correa.
"Ashley rolled her ankle about a minute after she scored in the Westminster game," said Kiely. "We missed her presence. (Forward) Brit Scannell had a good game but there wasn't a lot up top for her to be able to do."
About 20 hours after the Redlands game ended, the Warriors were scheduled to take the field in Claremont. Before that happened, the team took care of some business.
"Saturday, the players got up early and met without the coaching staff knowing," reported the coach. "They had a rounding up of the troops and came more ready to play. Claremont came at us a little bit in the first half, but we were able to hang. We couldn't quite capitalize on a couple of our chances, but in the second half and the two overtimes, I would say we dominated.
"Jenny Martinez had a fantastic game up top," said Kiely. "She was able to hold the ball and to flick it on to people running along side her. She read the game very well and was able to make the right call with what she was given.
"Leeza Henderson came in and had her best game yet. Brit Scannell, as usual, was running up and down the sideline and was a force to be recognized with in getting us in. It would be nice to get her closer to goal where she has a chance to finish and not necessarily always in the build-up.
