Ashley Correa scored three goals and added an assist as #12 Westmont posted an 8-1 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over the Hawks of San Diego Christian on Saturday at Thorrington Field. With the win, the Warriors improved to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play. San Diego Christian is now 4-8 overall and 0-5 in the GSAC standings.
Westmont's first goal came just over three minutes into the game. Correa passed the ball from the left side of the field to Samantha Kleen. Kleen became one of six Warriors to score in the game when she buried the ball in the net from 12 yards out.
In the twentieth minute, Aolani Rueff dribbled down the left side from the midfield stripe, beat her defender and scored from 10 yards out. The Warriors made it 3-0 in the twenty-second minutes when Jenny Martinez turned and scored from eight yards out in front of the goal.
San Diego Christian scored its goal in the twenty-sixth minute on a free kick by Nicole Quintanilla from just above the box, making the score 3-1.
Correa's first goal came in the thirtieth minute when she received a pass from Christine Adams from the left-hand corner. Four minutes later, Mallory Mitchell scored from six yards out after receiving a pass from Sophie Judd who was on the left side of the goal. Another four minutes passed and Kaci Mexico made it 6-1. She fired a ball that bounced off the crossbar and returned to her. Mexico fired again to record the goal.
Correa was responsible for both of the Warrior's second half goals. In the seventy-fourth minute, Correa launched a shot from 35 yards away in the middle of the field that found the right side of the net. In the eighty-second minute, her 22-yard shot from the left side accounted for the final score.
Eight goals are the most scored by the Warriors in a single game since Westmont defeated Hope International 8-0 on September 29, 2004.
In other GSAC action, #5 Point Loma Nazarene (13-0-1, 5-0 GSAC) defeated The Master's (8-6, 2-3) in Santa Clarita by a score of 1-0. Biola (7-5, 4-1) upset #3 Azusa Pacific (7-2-1, 3-2) in La Mirada by a score of 2-1 in double overtime. Sixteenth-ranked Concordia (11-2-1, 3-1-1) posted a 2-0 road win over Hope International (4-8, 0-5). Vanguard (10-2-1, 2-2-1) also won on the road, defeating Fresno Pacific (5-5, 1-4) by a 2-0 count.
As a result of today's GSAC action, Point Loma Nazarene remains on top of the conference standings with 15 points (three points for a win, one for a loss). Westmont and Biola are tied for second with 12 points while Concordia occupies fourth place with 10 points. Azusa Pacific has nine points and is in fifth place.
Westmont and Biola will attempt to settle the claim on second place when they meet up on Tuesday afternoon at Thorrington Field for a three o'clock game.
