Junior transfer
Michael Kwan picked up his first win as a Warrior on Saturday in the first game of a twin-bill at Russ Carr Field. Westmont (7-3) defeated Menlo (6-4) by a score of 2-1 in the opener but lost the second game 11-5.
Kwan started for the Warriors and pitched six innings in Westmont's 2-1 win over the Oaks of Menlo. Kwan gave up just one run on six hits.
Senior Jacob Regalado, who was awarded the save, came into the game in the seventh inning and did not allow a hit. Regalado faced just one over the minimum; allowing one walk while striking out three.
Menlo's run came in the first inning on a double to left field by Chris Mazza that drove in Paul Oakley. Oakley had reached on a walk.
The Warriors evened the score in the bottom of the second inning after Coby Cress singled up the middle to lead off the inning. One out later, Colten Christianson walked, moving Cress up one base.
Mitch Petrack grounded to second, but avoided the double play when Menlo first baseman Will Pierce was pulled off the bag by the throw from Mazza. Cress moved over to third on the play, giving Westmont runners on the corners with two away.
That brought up Westmont third baseman Chris Ramirez who knocked the ball down the right field line to score Cress.
The winning run came in the fourth inning. With one away, Petrak was hit my a pitch. Ramirez stepped to the plate and doubled to left center, advancing Petrak to third on the play. One out later Brent Fukushima walked to load the bases. With J.J. Turbin at the plate, Menlo pitcher Derek Martinez threw a ball in the dirt which scooted past Menlo catcher Ty Finley, allowing Petrak to score.
In the second game, the Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single to right center by Cress, a sacrifice fly by Jordan Bottenfield and an RBI single up the middle by Christianson.
Menlo scored one in the top of the second on an RBI single by Oakley, The big blow, however, came in the the next inning when Finley hit a grand slam home run down the left field line off of starter Tim Leary.
Westmont tied the score at five in the bottom fifth. With two outs and men on first and second, Petrak singled to left, driving in Cress who was at second. Menlo left fielder Collin Forgey misplayed the ball, allowing Christianson to score from first as well.
That would prove to be the end of the Warriors' scoring. However, the Oaks would go on to put up two in the fourth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Freshman Ryan Sullivan took the loss for the Warriors. He allowed two runs on two hits in one inning of work. Leary gave up five runs on eight hits in three innings.
On Tuesday, the Warriors will travel across town to take on the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara in a two o'clock game. Then on Thursday, Westmont starts Golden State Athletic Conference play by hosting the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific in a doubleheader. First pitch is at ten o'clock.
