Warriors Take Two from Oaks

Westmont Baseball (10-7) is thankful that the rain held off just long enough on Tuesday afternoon for the Warriors to win both ends of a doubleheader against Menlo (6-5). The Warriors won the first game by a score of 6-2 and the second by a 2-1 margin.

In the opener, JP Cohn (1-1) pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on six hits. Cohn struck out three and did not allow a walk;

Westmont took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a single run. David Pennington singled to right with one away, then reached second when J.J. Turbin singled to left. When David Gabel hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield, Pennington and Turbin advanced to second and third. Back-to-back walks to Thomas Hocutt and Brandon Gildea resulted in the run.

Westmont added three more runs in the bottom of the third. With one away, Turbin walked and Gabel was hit by a pitch. With runners at first and second, Hocutt singled to center field, driving in Turbin and advancing Gabel to second. Gildea then doubled the left field line, driving in both Gabel and Hocutt.

Menlo scored a single run in the top of the fourth inning. Kyer Vega led off the inning with a single to center field and later scored on an RBI single through the right side of the infield by Jimmy Bosco.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Chris Stroh doubled down the right field line and then advanced to third when Pennington grounded out to first base. Turbin then doubled down the left field line to drive in Stroh and give Westmont a 5-1 lead.

Westmont added one more in the bottom of the sixth. With two away, Will Barring tripped to left center and scored when Brent Fukushima scorched a shot off the third base bag for a double.

Matt Harringshaw (1-0) claimed the win in the seven-inning second game, giving up a single, unearned run on just three hits in five innings of work. Hunter Christian pitched a hitless sixth inning. Micahel Rishwain picked up the save, pitching the scoreless seventh.

Westmont scored one run in the bottom of the second inning. Gabel led off the inning by doubling down the left field line, then came home when Hocutts doubled down the right field line.

In the bottom of the fourth, Westmont made it a 2-0 lead. Hocutt singled to center with two away and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hocutt scored when Gildea singled to center.

Westmont will host British Columbia in a three game series beginning on Thursday at two o'clock.
