Murphy Throws One-Hitter in Warrior Win

Brian Murphy allowed just one hit in a complete seven-inning game on Saturday as Westmont (22-22) defeated #11 Cal State San Marcos (28-7) by a score of 1-0 in the second game of a doubleheader. The Cougars took the first game, defeating the Warriors 5-1.

In the nightcap, Murphy gave up a single to Cougar lead-off hitter Tyler Bernard. After a double play erased the base runner, Murphy walked Brandon Bentson. Those were the only two base runners that Murphy allowed. Murphy retired the next 19 batters in order – four struck out, 12 grounded out, one popped out to second, one lined out to short and one flew out to right field.

In the first game, Westmont fell behind 2-0 in the first inning on a two-RBI single by Kenny Belzer. San Marcos added another run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Bentson. In the top of the eighth, an RBI single by Marcus Meraz resulted in another run.

Westmont's run came in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Chito Elias doubled to center field. One out later, Elias scored when Stroh singled through the right side.

The Cougars added another run in the ninth after loading the bases with one away. Steve Messner received the win after pitching seven scores inning and allowing just two hits. He struck out ten and walked three.

Westmont's JP Cohn took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings.

The Warriors will return to Golden State Athletic Conference play next week when they host Arizona Christian. On Friday, the Warriors and Firestorm will meet on Russ Carr Field at three o'clock. On Saturday, the two squads will play a doubleheader beginning at noon.
