A Hat Trick for Mexico

Renee Gonsalves A hat trick for Kaci Mexico and two goals by Jackie Lopez accounted for five goals on Saturday at Thorrington Field as #11 Westmont Women's Soccer (9-3, 4-2 GSAC) posted a 7-0 Golden State Athletic Conference win over the visiting Firestorm of Arizona Christian (2-10, 0-5).

Mexico wasted no time in getting her team off on the right foot. In just the fourth minute of play, Mexico received a pass from Malory Mitchell and fought off a defender to score from four yards out on the left side.

In the 26th minute, sophomore Brooke Lillywhite slotted a ball to Mexico who was alone in the box. The senior fired past the keeper from 16 yards out to make it a 2-0 game.

Eight minutes later, the Warriors scored again after a Firestorm defender attempted to clear a ball from the box. Senior Christine Adams intercepted the ball, settled and fired from the top of the box into the right corner.

Westmont's fourth goal came in the 40th minute from freshman Jackie Lopez. Senior Angela Brown served a free kick in front of the goal that Lopez headed down and bounced into the goal.

In the 55th minute, Mexico scored her third goal of the day on another attempt by Arizona Christian to clear the ball. The Firestorm defender kicked a ball that bounced off of Lopez and redirected to Mexico. Mexico bounced the ball off her chest, then fired a shot that arced its way to the crossbar and down into the goal.

Lopez' second goal came just four minutes later. Sofia Smati took aim from 15 yards out on the left side and hit the crossbar. The ball rebounded to the right and found Lopez who tucked it past the keeper into the net.

Westmont's final goal came in the 80th minute. Grayce DeGroot headed a low flying goal kick back into the box and Kaitlin Swift charged after the ball. Swift reached the ball just before the Firestorm's keeper and poked it past her into an empty net.

The Warriors' next take the pitch on Saturday, October 18 when they host #5 Concordia (10-2-1, 4-0-1) as part of homecoming festivities.
