Playing against Antelope Valley (23-21) for the first time in school history, Westmont Baseball (28-14) extended its winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of the Pioneers. The Warriors, who outhit the Pioneers 34-15 over the two games, prevailed in the opening game by a score of 13-2 and claimed the second game by 10-2.
Senior starter Casey Schapper (3-0) earned the win in the first game after pitching a scoreless six innings. Schapper allowed just three hits, struck out four and walked two.
The Warriors earned one run in the bottom of the first on an RBI-double by David Gabel that drove in Brandon Gildea. In the second, Derek Rodigo hit a solo home run down the left field line to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team. Later in the second, Steven Pollex doubled to center field, driving in both Ryan Beveridge and Will Barring.
Gildea led off the fifth inning with a home run to right center, putting the Warriors up 5-0. Joey Gonzalez picked up an RBI in the sixth inning when he drove in Beveridge with an RBI single up the middle and Gildea notched an RBI with an infield single that scored Pollex.
The Warriors' biggest inning, however, was the six-run eighth. Gabel stroked a bases-loaded double to left field to allow Gonzales and Pollex to score. Then Blake Matthias delivered his third home run in as many games, this time a three-run shot to right. Michael Frigon would account for the final run of the inning when he doubled down the left field line to drive in Brent Fukushima.
Daniel Butler took the mound for the Warriors in the second game and earned a complete game victory (seven innings). Butler allowed two unearned runs on eight hits. He struck out two and walked two in his first collegiate victory.
In the second inning, Brent Fukushima drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly to center field that drove in Alex Bush from third. Barring then singled up the middle to drive in Rodigo. An infield single by Rudy Leon eventually drove in Barring.
Westmont picked up its other seven runs, in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Frigon singled up the middle to drive in Fukushima and Barring and move Graylin Derke to second. Leon stepped to the plate next and drove in Derke and Frigon with a double down the left field line.
After Leon stole third base, Gabled singled to left field to bring Leon home. A double to right field by Alex Bush moved Gable to third. Daniel Goebel then pinch ran for Bush. Rodigo brought in Gabel on a sacrifice fly to left that moved Goebel to third. Goebel scored when Fukushima, batting for the second time in the inning, doubled to left center.
The two squads will meet for another doubleheader tomorrow at one o'clock, this time in Lancaster.
