David Gunn made five of seven field goal attempts on his way to a game-high 15 points and five rebounds as #17 Westmont Men's Basketball (2-0) posted a 96-70 victory over the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz.
Olisa Nwachie added another 13 points on three buckets from the floor and seven free throws.
The Warriors opened play with a jumper by Sean McDonnell (10 points, 4 rebounds), which was answered with a layup by Jared Ponce (9 points). Ponce was fouled on the play and completed the old-fashioned three-point play.
Another free throw put the Banana Slugs up 4-2 before Cory Blau produced an "and-one" play to give Westmont a 5-4 advantage. That was the beginning of a 19-5 run that put Westmont ahead 21-9 with 13:38 remaining in the opening frame.
UC Santa Cruz responded with a 12-3 run to pull within three (24-21). However, the Warriors turned the tables with a 20-5 run to go up 44-26 with 3:20 left in the first half. At intermission, Westmont held a 52-32 advantage.
Westmont led by no less than 18 throughout the second half.
The Warriors, who saw all 15 available players take the court, shot 53.5 percent from the floor (32 of 60) and 38.7 percent from three-point range (12 of 31). Seven different Warriors completed three-point shots.
Westmont will play its next five games on the road, not returning to Murchison Gymnasium until Friday, December 4. First stop on the road trip will be at the Felix Center at Azusa Pacific on Monday night.
