Baseball Sweeps William Jessup

Alex Bush

Twelfth-ranked Westmont Baseball (28-8, 22-7 GSAC) earned a sweep of William Jessup (5-26, 5-24) this weekend in a three-game Golden State Athletic Conference series in Marysville. Westmont took Friday's game 17-2 and then won Saturday's doubleheader 7-2 and 14-10. The #12 ranking is the highest in Westmont's history.

On Friday, Daniel Butler earned his fifth win of the season against no loses. He pitched six innings giving up one run on five hits. He struck out four and walked one.

Offensively, the Warriors connected for 14 hits including five doubles. Derek Rodigo produced a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to complete the Warrior scoring.

Alex Bush took the mound for the Warriors in the first game on Saturday and earned his second win of the season. Bush pitched five scoreless innings while allowing four hits. He struck out three and walked one.

Bush also contributed to the Warriors' offense, recording the front end of back-to-back home runs in the third inning. Will Barring connected for the second home run.

In the top of the fourth, Westmont added three runs on an RBI double by Rudy Leon and a two-RBI single by Ryan Crowe.

In the fifth inning, Blake Matthias homered to left.

Adrian Farago picked up a save after entering the game in the ninth with the score 7-2, bases loaded and one away. Farago got the next two batters to strike out swinging and pop out to second base.

In the seven-inning nightcap, Westmont took control with a five run first inning. Bush – who went three for four in the game with three runs scored and three RBIs, drove in the first run with a single through the left side. Bush then scored when Matthias – who went four for five with three runs scored and five RBIs – delivered the first of his two home runs in the game.

Westmont added two more runs in the first inning on an RBI-double by Steven Pollex and a sacrifice fly by Leon.

However, William Jessup kept fighting and tied the game at nine runs each in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-RBI single by Garrett Ferreira. After Westmont scored a single run in the top of the sixth on an RBI-single by Graylin Derke, William Jessup responded in the bottom of the sixth with a run of their own, tying the game at 10.

A two-RBI home run by Bush in the top of the seventh provided half of the runs the Warriors would score in the frame. The other two would be provided by a Matthias' second home run of the game.

Sam Sheehan (2-2) earned the win by retiring all five batters he faced – two by strikeouts – in the eighth and ninth inning.

The Warriors will play a rare weekday series next week, traveling to La Mirada for a single game against Biola on Wednesday and a doubleheader on Thursday.
