McDonnell's Double-Double Spurs Warriors' Win

Box Score

A double-double by Sean McDonnell led #23 Westmont Men's Basketball (19-8, 8-6 GSAC) to a 96-76 Golden State Athletic Conference win over San Diego Christian (10-14, 3-11) an Saturday night. McDonnell tallied 23 points on 9 of 14 shooting and recorded 11 rebounds, six of which were from the offensive glass.

Westmont's Cory Blau added another 17 points and six rebounds for the Warriors while Olisa Nwachie contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.

Westmont took its first lead of the game (11-8) on a three-pointer by Blau with just under 16 minutes remaining in the first half. A couple of free throws by Nwachie made the score 13-8 before the Hawk's Mark Eden hit a three and a couple of free throws by Trevor English (24 points) tied the score at 13-all.

Nwachie and Blau responded with back-to-back layups, but an old-fashioned three-point play by English pulled San Diego Christian back to within one (17-16).

Over the next four minutes, Westmont went on a 20-7 run to claim a 14-point advantage (37-23). Six different Warriors contributed to the run that started with an 'and-one' play and a layup by McDonnell. A layup by David Gunn was followed by three-pointer by Sam Bentz. Karczewski connected for another three before Blau added a jumper and Britton Williams scored on a layup. Blau then nailed a three-pointer to complete the run.

Westmont started the second half with a 12-point advantage (51-39), but in the first five minutes turned it into a 73-49 lead. The Warriors never led by less than 20 points in the second frame.

At 8-6, Westmont sits in fifth place in the GSAC standings. Having already clinched at least the number five seed in the upcoming GSAC Tournament, the Warriors have an opportunity to move up to number three or four.

Westmont will close out the regular season with two road games this week. On Thursday, the Warriors will play at #22 William Jessup (18-8, 10-5). On Saturday afternoon, Westmont will close out the GSAC season with a game at Menlo.

If the Warriors win out, Westmont will move up to the number four seed. If Arizona Christian were to lose both its games this week against #6 Hope International and Vanguard, Westmont would gain the number three seed.

All rounds of the GSAC Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament will be held at Hope International in Fullerton. First round action will be held on Friday, March 4 with the semifinals on Saturday, March 5. The championship games are schedule for Tuesday, March 8.
