(RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif.) Westmont women's tennis, the reigning Golden State Athletic Conference champions, opened up its new conference campaign with a 4-1 victory over Marymount on Saturday.

"It was great to take a win on the first GSAC match of the season," Westmont head coach Ellie Johnson said.

For the first time this campaign, Westmont took the point available in doubles, winning two of three doubles matches.

"Cade (Pierson) and Emily (Peterson) dominated at number one doubles," Johnson said. "Sidney (Lowry) and Rachal (Jackson) battled, pulling out a big win at two."

Marymount won the first doubles match that finished, when Sabrina Subero and Jensen Barnes defeated Christine Hemry and Ana Negri at number three, 6-0.

The Warriors responded by winning at doubles one and two. Cade Pierson and Emily Peterson defeated Miah Webb and Shahrazad Barahat at number one, 6-3. Sidney Lowry and Rachal Jackson then picked up the Warriors' other victory in doubles, winning 7-5 against Hailey McNall and Hannah White at number two.

In singles, Westmont won three of the four matches that finished. Two were left unfinished after the Warriors clinched the necessary four points to win the match.

"We made necessary adjustments to take the singles matches," Johnson said. "Marymount has brought on a few solid players. Our women played with focus and discipline to pull out close singles."

Pierson won at number one, defeating Miah Webb, 6-3, 6-2. Peterson beat Barnes at number two, 6-3, 6-3. Lowry picked up the Warriors' final victory in singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Subero at number four.

Jackson's match against McNall at number three was left unfinished (6-3, 1-6, 3-3), with Jackson responding to a first set loss by winning the second.

Hemry's match at number five was also not completed, with White winning the first set 7-5 before Hemry was leading 5-3 in the second when the match was called.

Barahat picked up the Mariners' lone point, defeating Ava Verchimak at number six, 6-0, 6-0.

Westmont returns to GSAC action on Friday at William Jessup. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
