(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont played host to old GSAC rival Arizona Christian on Saturday, when the Warriors picked up their first win of the season. The Firestorm took the day's first point in doubles, but the Warriors stormed back to take five of six singles matches for the 5-2 win.
Â
During doubles, on two,
Logan Thompson and
Owen Vander Ark defeated Lennert LeMahieu and Gustavo Montoya 6-1. On one and three, however, ACU flipped the script to go up early. On three, Adrian Smith and Josiah Tanguma defeated
Goor Adiv and
Valentin Dignac 6-4, and on one, Hugo Abril and Jonas Wand bested
Ethan Ha and Gavin Stone 7-5.
Â
In singles, however, Westmont lost only three sets combined throughout six matches. ACU's lone win came on one, where Hugo Abril defeated
Ethan Ha 6-4, 6-1. In rather dominant fashion, though, the Warriors began to quickly even the score before jumping out to a lead.
Â
On three, Thompson defeated LeMahieu 6-0, 6-4, and on five and six, Vander Ark and
Preston Hastings collected identical 6-3, 6-2 wins. On two, Stone got the better of Wand 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the match and for good measure, Adiv won a three-set tiebreaker over Smith by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 10-6.
Â
"It was a great team win today," said Westmont head coach
Chris Elwood. "We just had terrific energy from top-to-bottom, and it was great to come-from-behind after losing the doubles point. We just responded with resilience, and that was led by captain
Logan Thompson.
Â
"A huge shout-out to
Austin Stone for clinching the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win against a very strong player in Jonas Wand. It was a terrific team effort and a great way to bounce back after Biola."
Â
The Warriors will return to action on Monday at 2:00 p.m., when they are scheduled to play Azusa Pacific at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet club.
