Westmont Takes Care of Business against Dominican

(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Volleyball (11-14, 5-6 PacWest) won their third in a row on Friday night, when the Warriors took care of the Dominican Penguins (1-24, 0-11) in three sets. After an ever-so-brief slow start, Westmont woke up and dominated Dominican for a majority of the evening.

It took the Warriors a few minutes to arrive on scene, with Dominican taking a 7-2 lead before the chairs were warm. McGolpin then used an early timeout to try and resettle the Warriors against a Dominican team that had not won a set since the third of October entering Friday night. From that point on, the Warriors found their footing and calmly clawed back to take control. Westmont tied it at 11, went up 12-11, and never again let Dominican tie in a set Westmont once led by as many as seven at 23-16. The deficit ended that way as well, when a Dominican service ace allowed the Warriors to secure a 25-18 win to open the night.

In the second set Dominican scored the first point, which would be the only time in the entire game that Westmont would trail. Westmont led 10-8 early on, then rattled off eight-consecutive scores to take a commanding 18-8 advantage. The Warriors wouldn't stop there, as eventually, a kill from Audrey Hyde brought an official end to the second set with Westmont winning 25-15.

In the third, Dominican led 8-7, before a 5-0 run gave Westmont a lead they could never relinquish. A pair of kills from Ceanna O'Loughlin highlighted what eventually became a 9-1 run for Westmont that put the Warriors up 16-9. One more five-point swing awaited the Warriors late, when a kill from Maddie Finnegan sent Westmont's lead in double-figures at 22-12. The night came to an end moments later, when Finnegan's ninth kill secured a 25-14 win in the third to complete the sweep.

"We started off slow, which was not pleasant to my ears and eyes," acknowledged McGolpin, "but we were able to recover in set two and three and make a statement in those two sets. We were able to get Elarika Eiklor in the game, and she was able to get her first college kill, and we were able to get Addie Emerson in there as well.

"Audrey Hyde had a phenomenal hitting percentage, and collectively, we were solid on the defensive end. The difference between our two teams was that we had really solid passing tonight."

Looking forward to tomorrow's season finale against Jessup, McGolpin said, "Tomorrow is going to be a great match. They've beaten us quite a few times recently, so it would be nice to get one back on them tomorrow night."

Westmont holds an 18-4 lifetime advantage over Jessup, but Jessup has taken all four of those in a consecutive-fashion, dating back to November of 2022.
