Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Tennis Begins Season in Santa Barbara

February 1, 2025

(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Men's and Women's tennis began their seasons on Saturday in Santa Barbara, when the Warriors played host to the Point Loma Sea Lions. The Sea Lions ultimately had their way with the Warriors, as the visitors eventually headed back down south with a pair of season-opening wins.

Point Loma's women defeated Westmont's women 7-0 in the morning, where the Sea Lions would not so much as surrender a single set. In doubles, the Sea Lions rattled off a pair of 6-1 victories on court one and two, which made Francesca Aguirre and Justie Spitzer's effort on three a moot point. At time of clinch, Westmont's number-three doubles team trailed 4-3.

In singles, Sophia Ostovany put up one of Westmont's better fights, with Alina Kupfer defeating Ostovany 6-3, 6-3. On five, Anna Pallencaoe defeated Spitzer by the same score, while on four, Johanna Winkler lost her Westmont debut 6-2, 6-1.

For Westmont's men, the Warriors were able to salvage a point in singles, but still lost the match by a score of 6-1. Point Loma's men took care of business beginning in doubles, but in singles, Westmont's Austin Stone was able to defeat Alexander Leischner by a score of 7-5, 5-7, 11-9. Stone also put up a good fight in doubles, where he and Goor Adiv were knotted with Point Loma's number-one team at time of clinch (5-5).

Adiv also took a set in singles, where he ultimately fell 3-6, 6-4, 2-6 to Niclas Goltz.

"The highlight of the day really goes to Austin Stone," noted Westmont head coach Chris Elwood. "Alex Leischner is really one of the top players in the PacWest. Alex is a former PacWest Player of the Year, and also a winner of the ITA Regional. For Austin to be able to win his match today, that was a really solid way to start his junior year. Elsewhere, we came up short, but we had opportunities against a very solid Point Loma team."
