Men’s Tennis is on the Board

(ROCKLIN, Calif.) Westmont Men's Tennis is on the board after the club defeated the Jessup Warriors on Sunday by a score of 7-0. Not only is it the team's first win against a conference opponent in 2025, but it is the club's first win against a conference opponent in the regular season since the Warriors transitioned to the NCAA Division II level.

"It's particularly gratifying after such a narrow loss yesterday," reflected Westmont head coach Chris Elwood. "After losing three straight matches 4-3, it just felt great to go get one today. In my 16 years of coaching, I can't remember a stretch like that where we'd just gotten narrowly edged back-to-back-to-back.

"We've been so close to this. The signs have been there. We've just gotten narrowly beaten down the wire. Today, it was a sweet victory."

In doubles, Diego De Cooman and Jonathan Ball got the Warriors off on the right foot with a 6-1 win on line two, before Austin Stone and Goor Adiv clinched the match's first point with a 6-3 win at line one.

The momentum carried into a dominant showing in singles, where Westmont won all six matches in straight sets. The first match to final was Preston Hastings' on line six, where he dispelled Owen Cooper 6-0, 6-1. Sidharth Maharana's win at line five came soon after (6-2, 6-0), followed by Diego De Cooman's clinch at one to seal the match (6-0, 6-2).

For good measure, Goor Adiv got it done at line two (6-1, 6-2), Antoine De Cooman won on court four (6-1, 6-2), and Valentin Dignac got it done at line three (6-3, 6-1).

"We had to play with a bit of a different lineup today with some guys banged up, and the team really rose to the challenge," noted Elwood. "It was a great way to capstone this trip up here.

"In terms of quality of play, Diego the last two days has been a big highlight. He beat a strong player yesterday, and today, he was just so efficient. He was great in doubles as well, which collectively would be our other highlight. We tried a new lineup this weekend, and once again today, we were able to clinch a doubles point."

Elwood continued, "There's also been some notably-improved play from our freshman, Jonathan Ball. Then Val the last couple days has carried some solid doubles play into singles. One more highlight would be the play of Antoine. Antoine was a little off yesterday, but he re-found himself today and won a really clean match. He looked like himself again."

The Warriors return to classes and return to their home court on Monday afternoon, when they play host to Colorado Mesa at 3:00 p.m.
