(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) The Westmont Women's Tennis team stayed busy through spring break with four matches scheduled, and after navigating a week's worth of inclement weather, three of those matches came to fruition. Unfortunately for the Warriors, they dropped all three matches to push a season-long losing streak to seven games.
The week started on Wednesday in Turlock, where Stanislaus State handed the Warriors an eventual 7-0 loss.
Sabina Salva was the lone Warrior to so much as force a third set on Wednesday, and she ultimately fell to Maiah White 4-6, 6-4, 6-10 on court five. Elsewhere, SSU handled the rest of the Warriors in straight sets.
After a postponement against Jessup on Thursday, the Warriors returned to action in a doubleheader on Saturday. Unfortunately, a short-handed squad fell 4-1 to Menlo, and 4-3 to Academy of Art.
Against the Oaks,
Kaley Houshmand collected Westmont's lone point of the morning, with the senior coming away with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win against Carlotta Stern.
"We played to clinch, and I think that match would have looked as competitive as it really was if we were able to play it out," noted head coach
Cade Pierson. "Kaley obviously got it done, and Lauren, Sophia, and Jo were playing great matches as well. I am confident we Sophia and Jo would have won their matches if they got to finish."
Against ART U, Houshmand won by default at line six, and Salva defeated Maddie Morrow in straight sets on line five.
Justie Spitzer also got the Warriors on the board on court four, where she dispatched Georgina Parr 6-3, 6-4. After losing an early doubles point, however, losses at line one, two, and three saw the Warriors come up one point short.
"Justie and Sabina played really well today," assured Pierson. "Justie was challenged a bit more in this one, and she performed well under that pressure. It was another tough one for Lauren today, but still, I am proud of her fight. She plays a tough spot as a freshman and this week she's played even higher up in the lineup. She's proving she deserves to play high and this is going to serve you for the next four years, not just this season."
The Warriors will play their final home match on Monday, March 17 at 12:00 p.m. against Colorado Mesa.
