(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Women's Tennis (4-7) was unable to take advantage of the end of their season-long home stand this weekend, when the Warriors dropped a pair of matches on their home court. On Friday, Westmont fell to Hawaii Pacific 5-2, and on Saturday, the Warriors lost by the same score to Dominican.
On Friday, the club's two's and three's got the Warriors on the board early with a big win in doubles, but the Warriors were unable to take advantage of the early start.
Lauren Gee was the lone Warrior to win a singles match on Friday, as she defeated Emily Castillo 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
Speaking to Friday's match, head coach
Cade Pierson said, "I was incredibly proud of our win in doubles. We had some last-minute changes so we had to throw in Sabina to our number-three doubles team, and she and Sophia rose to the occasion. Having such little experience together, they played great. Frenchy and Justie did a great job as well, moving up to two after playing three's all year.
"We fell a little flat in singles, but Lauren played a great match. HPU is a challenging opponent, but also, if we had played earlier in the season I think they could have swept us. I'm still proud of how we competed, but our energy and performance was a bit flat today. We're still growing, and I keep reminding the team that progress is not linear. We're going to have plateaus and valleys."
On Saturday against Dominican it was a similar story, with the Warriors unable to take advantage of an early doubles point. The Warriors lone point in singles came on six, where
Kaley Houshmand defeated Logan Koitka 7-6 (5), 2-6, 10-4.
"It was similar to yesterday in ways," reflected Pierson, "but I'm really proud of how we competed. I don't think we fell flat, I think Dominican just played better. I was really proud once again to take the doubles point, with the two's and three's taking care of business. I am really proud of their strength in doubles, both as teams and individuals.
"In singles, Kaley took care of business. I was really proud of her to get the win on senior day, and I'm really proud of Jo, too. Jo played a great match against a really solid opponent. Across the board, I felt like we competed well despite losing. I think we're in a good place going into a big week of competition."
