(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Men's Tennis (2-0) did not drop a single set on Thursday in Santa Barbara, as the Warriors swept the Whittier Poets (0-2) 7-0. The Warriors have now defended home court with consecutive 7-0 wins to open the season.
Â
The day began in dominant fashion in doubles on courts one and three, where
JD Drake and
Driss Sedrati, and
Rafael Matias and
Arjun Sivakumar both won 6-1. For good measure,
Diego De Cooman and
Zach Steinberg out-lasted their opponents on two, as the last duo to play finished doubles with a 6-4 win.
Â
In singles, the only court where a Poet won more than three games in a single set was on line four. Still,
Antoine De Cooman bent in set one but refused to break, as he ultimately defeated Aravind Binoj 7-6 (2), 6-2. The older De Cooman made quick work of Dylan Duong at line one (6-1, 6-1), while Matias showed similar dominance with a win over Dario Ludusan at line two (6-0, 6-1).
Â
Sedrati only got better as the day went one, as he disposed of Tyler Perez 6-2, 6-0 at line three. Rounding things out, Steinberg was victorious 6-1, 63 at line five, and
Sidharth Maharana won his match 6-2, 6-1 at line six.
Â
"There was great energy today from all the guys," said head coach
Chris Elwood. "It was a day that was just about taking care of business, and making sure that we maintained our high level of tennis. We had a little bit better of a performance in doubles today, which was great to see for Zach and Diego.
Â
"Overall, I have been very pleased with how the team has been practicing and really building on their games as we get ready for our conference matches starting next week. This match got us better, and that's what is most important."
Â
Westmont's first road match of the year will take place down south on Saturday, where they will take on friend Hope International at noon.
