(SAN RAFAEL, Calif.) Westmont Women's Tennis (8-12) was defeated by the tightest of margins on Friday at Dominican (9-8), with the hosts earning a 4-3 victory.
In hindsight, the opening doubles point proved crucial as three competitive matches took place. Westmont's number two pair of
Liska Knight and
Thea Donarski were defeated 6-4 before
Sabina Salva and
Lauren Gee fell 7-5 on court one, clinching the point for the Penguins. Number three pair
Emma Rashid and
Justie Spitzer's match ended tied 6-6, before a decisive tiebreaker could take place.
Despite the overall final score, the singles matches were mostly straightforward; four of the six were decided in straight sets. After Dominican earned a quick win on court six, Donarski—Westmont's number one—won 6-1, 6-3 to get the Warriors on the board. Gee won her match 6-4, 6-2 on court four to tie the overall score at 2-2, but Dominican countered with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court three.
With Westmont needing to win both of the remaining matches, Spitzer and Dos Pueblos graduate
Ellie Triplett both forced third sets by winning the second on courts two and five, respectively. Unfortunately, for the Warriors, Dominican clinched the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win on court two.
The result now confirmed, Triplett's Dominican opponent retired. Thus, the Warrior took a 4-6, 6-4, 2-2 victory by retirement to get to the 4-3 overall final.
It is the first time this year the Warriors have fallen by that scoreline, having won the previous three matches decided by one point (Cal Lutheran, CSU Los Angeles, Chapman).
The Warriors continue their Sacramento-Bay Area road trip, playing their third match in as many days on Saturday against Menlo (10-5) beginning at 11 a.m.
