(AZUSA, Calif.) Westmont Men's Tennis (10-9) finished up a five-game road trip by visiting Azusa Pacific (18-5) on Monday afternoon. The Warriors fell to the Cougars by a score of 5-2.
"That was our fourth match in six days," noted Westmont's head coach
Chris Elwood. "So, to see the fight that the guys put out there was amazing. It showed a resilience in them. We gave APU a good run today.
"The highlight today was
Driss Sedrati winning at number two. It is his 10th match in a row. That has to be a Westmont Division II record. He played real well, moving the ball from corner to corner. He stayed within himself and was very patient until he created an opening. I was really proud of his efforts."
Sedrati posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over Ben Behrend. Picking up Westmont's second point was
JD Drake who earned a 6-3, 4-6, (10-5) win over Christopher Marci.
"JD is on his streak of four in a row," pointed out Elwood. "He clutched out a super tiebreaker for the third set. He continued his controlled, aggressive play. He hits a big serve, then backs it up with ground strokes until he sees an opening to come into the net. I thought he played really well."
On the number one court,
Diego De Cooman lost to Soeren Grandke 6-0, 6-4, while at number four,
Antoine De Cooman fell to Joan Crespo by scores of 7-6 (3), 6-0.
"At number four, we had a tiebreaker and a pretty good second set from Diego," expressed Elwood.
Rafael Matias lost to David Brownlee 6-0, 6-3 on the number three court and
Zach Steinberg lost to Jacob Rudd-Hicks 6-3, 6-2 at number five."
Prior to singles play, Azusa Pacific claimed the doubles point by winning on courts one and two. Drake and Sedrati lost to Behrend and Grandke 6-3 on court one. At number two,
Diego De Cooman and Steinberg fell to Brownlee and Viktor Van Craenenbroeck 6-3. On the number one court, play was suspended at 5-4 in favor of Westmont's
Jon Ball and
Arjun Sivakumar over Crespo and Marci when the doubles point was decided.
"The doubles were three-all at one and two until Azusa broke it open," said Elwood.
The Warriors have one game remaining on their schedule.
"We are looking forward to our last home match of the year against Point Loma this Saturday (April 11). "Our sites are on that. We have a senior day celebration for our one captain,
Diego De Cooman. He is our captain and we are going to celebrate him."
