(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Tenth ranked Westmont Men's Tennis (4-3, 3-2 GSAC) hit the road on Friday for a match against Azusa Pacific and hosted a match against Hope International earlier today. The Warriors fell to the Cougars by a score of 2-7, and earned their third conference win when they swept against the Royals in a score of 9-0.
Against Azusa Pacific, the Warriors won one two out of three doubles matchups. Playing at number two,
Luke Whalen and
Christian Mathis defeated Shepherd Newcomb and Christian Schmid 9-8 (7-5); and playing at number three,
Tommy Nightingale and
Austin Lee overcame Antonio Pejic and Cameron Backman 9-8 (7-5). The Cougars' Oliver Frank and Pascal Engel earned a point when they were victorious over
Philipp Sibbel and John T. Joens in a score of 8-2, playing at number one.
In singles, the Cougars were victorious in all six matchups. At number one, Frank defeated Whalen 6-4,6-2; at number two, Schmid conquered Sibbel in three sets 2.6, 6-4, 6-1; Engel defeated Mathis in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 at number three; Newcomb overcame Joens 7-5,6-4 at number four; at number five Pejic overcame Nightingale 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) and at number six Roberto Luconi defeated
Luke Barnard defeated Wagner 7-6 (7-4),7-5.
The Warriors improved to 3-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference when they swept Hope International earlier today.
Westmont was victorious in all three doubles matchups – Sibbel and Joens defeated Mauricio Masquera and Adrien Varenne 9-8 (5), playing at number one; at number two, Mathis and Whalen overcame Avi Bami and Andy Rivas 8-2; and Nightingale and Lee conquered Sergio Romero and Gabriel Barozetti 8-6, playing at number three.
In singles, Whalen defeated Mosquera 6-1,6-0; Sibbel was triumphant over Varenne in a score of 6-2,6-1; Joens conquered Barazetti 6-3, 6-4; Nightingale defeated Romero 6-1,6-1; Barnard overcame Rivas 6-0,6-0; and
Jordan Strandness defeated Bami 6-0,6-1.
Coming up next week, Westmont will host Division I South Dakota State University on Thursday March 9 at 1:00 p.m.
