(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Tennis hosted the Eagles of Biola Saturday in their third to last conference match of the season - the women fell in a score of 4-5, while the men clinched a victory in a score of 5-4.
In the women's match, the Warriors won at numbers one, two, and three singles and the Eagles won at numbers four, five, and six. For Westmont, Isabel Lee defeated Madeline Heer 6-1,6-1; Cade Pierson downed Brooke Sanford 6-0,6-1; and Bruna Chaves conquered Lauren Lee 6-4,6-4. For Biola, Tinisee Kandakai defeated Zarina Huber 6-3,7-5; Kelsey Post overcame Sienna Verdult 7-6 (7-5), 6-2; and Katie Boesl defeated Miyana Wagner 6-2,6-3.
The match was tied 3-3 going into doubles; however, the Eagles clinched the victory when they won two out of the three doubles matches. Westmont's Lee and Pierson were victorious over Post and Heer in a score of 8-4, playing at number one; Biola's Lee and Sanford defeated Huber and Chaves 8-3 playing at number two; and Biola's Kandakai and Boesl downed Verdult and Wagner 8-2 playing at number three.
Westmont Women's Tennis (2-14, 2-4 GSAC) is currently ranked fourth in the GSAC – one game behind Biola (6-11, 3-4 GSAC).
In the men's match, the Warriors won four out of six singles and one out of three doubles matchups.
Luke Whalen defeated Lucas Lee 6-0, 6-3 playing at number one; Philipp Sibbel conquered Phil Westwood 6-0, 6-3 playing at number two; Biola's Derek James downed Christian Mathis 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) playing at number three; John T. Joens defeated Luke Mountain 7-4, 7-6 (7-1) playing at number four; Tommy Nightingale overcame Joe Turnquist 6-2, 6-3 playing at number five; and Biola's David Garcia defeated Luke Barnard 6-3, 6-1 playing at number six.
In doubles, Nightingale and Austin Lee were victorious at number three doubles to give the Warriors their fifth point – they defeated Milos Zoric and Garcia 8-3. Biola's James and Lee defeated Sibbel and Mathis 8-4, playing at number one; and Mountain and Westwood defeated Joens and Whalen due to a Westmont retirement.
With only two conference matches remaining, #12 Westmont Men's Tennis (8-7, 4-2 GSAC) is second in the Golden State Athletic Conference – behind #7 Arizona Christian (11-10, 5-0 GSAC).
Coming up this week, Westmont Tennis will travel to Fullerton on Thursday April 6 to play Hope International at 1:00 p.m.
