Westmont Volleyball, ranked number three in the NAIA, has achieved a milestone. By defeating Menlo 3-0 (25-9, 25-19. 25-22), the team is off to its best start in program history with a 13-0 record. The Warriors, who have yet to play at home this year, are looking forward to finally playing in front of their own fans on Friday, September 16.
At Menlo (5-8, 0-2 GSAC), Westmont (2-0 in conference play) posted a .315 attack percentage over three sets while holding the Oaks to .051. Sam Neely led the way for the Warriors offensively with 10 kills and a .368 attack percentage. Jessica McCann, who did not have a hitting error, notched nine kills and a .474 attack percentage.
The Warriors cruised to an easy victory in the first set. Like last night against William Jessup, Buffham proved her value from the service line. The sophomore setter served for seven straight points to move the Warrior advantage from 8-4 to 15-4.
The second set was more closely contest. Down 9-8, Westmont scored the next six points to take a 14-9 lead, and never looked back.
The third set was closer still. With the game tied at 17, Menlo scored the next two points on a couple of Warrior errors. Westmont responded by scoring the next four points including a kill by Mila Maricic, a block by Maricic and Sarah McGough and a block by Maricic and McCann.
William Jessup tied the game at 21 on kills by Sierra Buscher and Emily Sunada before McCann delivered three kills in a row to make it a 24-21 game. After a Warrior attack error made it 24-22, McCann struck again to claim match point and send the Warriors home still undefeated.
Westmont will open at home against Arizona Christian (1-4, 0-2) at seven o'clock on Friday and then host San Diego Christian (6-6, 0-2) on Saturday at one in the afternoon. The Warriors are currently tied with #15 Biola (10-5, 2-0) and Vanguard (4-10, 2-0) for first place in the GSAC standings.
